SUMMARY:OboeBass! Coffee Concert at the Lakeville Area Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:Oboist Carrie Vecchione and bassist Rolf Erdahl of OboeBass! present an Americana-themed recital at the Lakeville Area Arts Center\, Sun.\, March 1\, at 2:00 pm. Carrie and Rolf are the founders and continuing organizers of the Lakeville Area Arts Center (LAAC) Coffee Concert series. The couple bills themselves as “the world’s only profession oboe/bass duo\,” and have created an extensive repertoire of crossover classical music for their unique combination of instruments that they perform around the country in concerts and educational programs. Individually they have active teaching and performing careers. Vecchione teaches at the MacPhail Center for Music and Erdahl teaches bass at Gustavus Adolphus College. Each year they perform on one of the Lakeville Coffee Concerts\, usually in collaboration with other leading Twin Cities artists. Erdahl notes “This year we collaborate with some of the wonderful composers who have written really engaging and interesting music for us\, often in outside-the-box concepts. This year we’re thrilled to present a world premiere by Valerie Coleman along with works of eight other stellar composers.” \nComposer Valerie Coleman \nThe program includes the World Premiere of Valerie Coleman’s American Vein\, commissioned for OboeBass! The Washington Post’s music critic hailed Valerie Coleman as “one of the Top 35 Women Composers.” This commission was made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program\, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. “We were thrilled to win this national competition to commission this work\,” says Carrie Vecchione. “We’ve been long-time fans of Valerie’s work as flutist and composer for the Imani Winds\, and are thrilled to add a piece by her to our repertoire.” Coleman’s 5-movement piece tours America\, starting with the Redwood Forests\, cruises down Rt. 66\, visits Woodstock of 1952\, pays homage to the Melting Pot at the Statue of Liberty\, and finishes off with “Barn Raising\, Bourbon and Bluegrass.” \nComposers\, performers\, and Cy and Paula DeCosse \nAlso on the program is The Many Faces of Cy DeCosse\, a piece written by 6 composers inspired by different artworks from Cy DeCosse’s recent retrospective exhibition at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. “Cy DeCosse is a Minneapolis artist\, photographer\, ad-man\, and absolute genius\,” says Carrie. “His ad work created images that stick in people’s minds\, including Mr. Bubble\, the Hamms Bear\, and Funny Face beverages to Downy fabric softener bouncing on towels. His painterly photographs and vivid drawings and tempera artworks are breathtaking!” The composers each chose an artwork that appealed to them and wrote music to match. The composers are Mary Ellen Childs\, Randall Davidson Tim Goplerud\, Steve Heitzeg\, Sarah Miller\, and David Evan Thomas. All of the composers except Tim (NJ) are based in Minnesota. “Being in on the genesis and premiere of this work last summer at the MCAD exhibition opening was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us\,” relates Erdahl. “It was a magical experience to work with such wonderful composers and perform it in the MCAD space in front of Cy’s brilliant and whimsical artworks.” This piece was commissioned for OboeBass! in honor of Cy DeCosse by Bill and Penny George and the George Family Foundation. Photos of the artworks accompany the Coffee Concert performance. OboeBass! rounds out the program with solo and duo works by Stephen Foster\, Tim Goplerud\, and Adrian Mann. \nRolf selfie with composera Randall\, Steve\, Mary Ellen\, Sarah\, and David at MCAD \n

The concert is in a casual\, cabaret setting\, with audience seated at tables. SUMMARY:OboeBass! in Zeitgeist Early Music Festival Concert: Julius Eastman's "Femenine"
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to be guest artists for this year’s installment of Zeitgeist’s Early Music Festival! We perform on the March 23 performance of Julius Eastman’s hypnotic\, minimalist masterpiece\, Femenine. Here’s info on the whole festival. Zeitgeist is amazing!!!\n\nZeitgeist’s 8th Annual Early Music Festival explores the powerful contributions of our musical pioneers with a celebration of African American minimalist composer Julius Eastman. Eastman’s vibrant\, virtuosic\, and rhythmically aggressive music\, and the racially and sexually charged nature of his work challenged the musical establishment and anti-establishment alike in the 1970s and 1980s\, greatly impacting the trajectory of American minimalism. Lost after his death in 1990\, Eastman’s music has been recently recovered is asserting its influence once again.\n\nThe festival will be preceded by two Lowertown Listening Sessions at Studio Z featuring performances and discussion of Eastman’s work led by experts in the field. On March 15\, historian/composer Davu Seru will discuss Eastman’s musical activism in conjunction with a performance of Evil Nigger. On March 21\, visiting author/composer/performer Mary Jane Leach will discuss her work recovering the music of Julius Eastman alongside a performance of Stay On It.  More info\nSCHEDULE:\nThursday\, March 22 at 7:30 p.m.\nEvil Nigger (four percussion)\nStay On It (mixed ensemble)\nBuddha (mixed ensemble)Friday\, March 23 at 7:30 p.m.\nFemenine (piano\, vibraphone\, percussion\, winds\, bass)Saturday\, March 24 at 7:30 p.m.\nCrazy Nigger (four pianos)Sunday\, March 25 at 2 p.m.\nStay On It (mixed ensemble)\nOur Father (2 vocalists)\nJoy Boy (2 percussion\, 2 flutes) \nGuest Artists: Eri Isomura and Bjorn Grina (percussion) from 10th Wave; Carrie Vecchione (oboe) and Rolf Erdahl (bass) from OboeBass!; Joshua Weinberg (flute) from RenegadeEnsemble; Joan Hutton (saxophone) from Ancia Saxophone Quartet; Julie Johnson (flute) from Crocus Hill Ghost Story; deVon Russell Gray (piano\, bassoon) from Heiruspecs; Davu Seru (drums) from No Territory Band; Michelle Kinney (cello) from JelloSlave); Bill Eddins and Jill Dawe (piano); and Joe Horton (vocals). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulius Eastman (1940-1990) was a composer\, vocalist\, and pianist. He was among a small number of 20th century African American composers who found their voice through the American experimental music tradition. Highly regarded as a performer and composer\, Eastman was a member of the Creative Associates at SUNY Buffalo from 1968-1975 and part of the “downtown” NYC music scene of the late 70s and 80s. He created high-powered minimalist works\, and was among the first to infuse minimalism with a pop music sensibility. He made bold social statements through his compositions\, addressing bigotry and non-inclusion of African Americans and LGBTQ communities with his use of provocative titles (Evil N….r\, Gay Guerrilla) and unconventional performance practice. A series of misfortunes and personal struggles left Eastman homeless in the mid 1980s\, with much of his music confiscated when he was evicted from his home. Eastman died in Buffalo in 1990 at age 49.

SUMMARY:Science of Music at East Lake Elementary
DESCRIPTION:Music is sound\, but there are lots of ways to observe\, measure\, describe\, and predict the sounds musicians make. Our Science of Music explores how sounds are made and measured\, and what it looks like on an oscilloscope. We make some rudimentary instruments and demonstrate how sounds are made on oboe and bass to show how science and art intersect. Thanks to East Lake Elementary for inviting us to present this program from our “Pages of Music” series of educational programs.

SUMMARY:Peter McGuire and Timothy Lovelace play music of Brahms and his Circle\,.
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to present Minnesota Orchestra Principal Second Violin Peter McGuire and U of M Professor of Collaborative Piano Timothy Lovelace in Music of Brahms and his Circle this Sunday at the Lakeville Area Arts Center. This is the second concert in the eleventh season of Coffee Concerts we organize at the LAAC.  \nPeter McGuire’s career has taken him from his hometown of Mankato to leadership roles in the world’s great orchestras. Peter and acclaimed pianist Timothy Lovelace join forces to perform intimate music composed by Brahms and his circle of closest friends and confidants in nineteenth-century Vienna. \nThe program: \nBrahms Scherzo WoO2\nClara Schumann Three Romances Op. 22\nRobert Schumann Abendlied Op.85\, No.12\nBrahms Hungarian Dance no.1\n-Intermission-\nBrahms Sonata for Violin and Piano\, No.1\, Op. 78\n\nThe virtuoso composer/pianist Robert Schumann wrote an influential article hailing Brahms as the savior of music\, suggesting Brahms may be Beethoven’s heir in the symphonic realm. This article both helped make Brahms’s career and almost paralyzed him from writing a symphony for the next twenty years for fear of not measuring up to Schumann’s high praise and ideals. \nThe pieces on this recital bear witness to the relationships between Brahms and the Schumanns. Robert’s Abendlied was originally a piece for piano four-hands that he wrote to play with his daughter\, Marie. The great violinist Joachim arranged it for piano and violin and performed it with Brahms as an introduction to the Schumanns in what would become one of the closest friendships in music history. Clara was one of the most respected pianists of her day. After Robert’s death\, she continued to concertize and champion the music of both Brahms and her late husband. Brahms remained Clara’s close friend. His First Violin Sonata quotes the melody of his song Regenlied\, which he wrote in memory of the death of one of the Schumanns’ children. In a way\, most of this concert is a form of Victorian restrained\, understated intimacy\, where someone like Brahms could say\, ‘I hope this work might bring you comfort.’ and let his music speak for him. \nAs always\, the concert will be accompanied by complimentary refreshments and Caribou Coffee in a casual\, tableside\, cabaret setting. \nAudrey Johnson Companies is celebrating its 51st anniversary in residential and commercial real estate in Lakeville. In honor of this occasion\, they are a Season Sponsor for this 11th season of the Coffee Concerts at the Lakeville Area Arts Center. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
